Get that garbage outta here!

Regular viewers to Toronto Raptor basketball games will be familiar with the expression “get that garbage outta here”. Sports commentator, Jack Armstrong, regularly shares these words during Raptor game broadcasts. Armstrong uses this phrase when a Raptor player successfully blocks a shot or attempted dunk by an opposing player.

The same can be said of the inner voice or self-critic that is so alive in every one of us. Our inner voice or Gremlin serves as an uninvited critic. Our inner commentator is active when we are in the midst of change – anything that challenges our comfort zone.

The Gremlin is especially active when we are close to realizing our dreams or stepping into a challenge such as competing for a starting position on a basketball team, changing schools, when we are about to write a test in class or thinking what our life will look like in the future.

“90% of the messages transmitted by the human brain on an average day, are negative.”

Here are two fascinating statistics we know about how our brain functions.

  1. On average the human brain receives and sends 35,000 messages a day. Ninety percent (90%) of these messages are negative.
  2. The human brain is wired to be negative. Think of how you react to the question “do you want hear the good news or the bad news, first?” The majority of us ask for the bad news first.

One of the ways to overcome the inner critic is to offer ourselves, praise. We can overcome our temptation to only focus on the negative by looking for the positive gift to be found in what is happening. “Getting that garbage outta here” is an important way to overcome the things that will limit our ability to be better basketball players, acing a test or seeing all the possibilities that are ahead of you after you graduate from school.
