2021 SBA Jamal Ali Memorial Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to our 2021 SBA Jamal Ali Memorial Scholarship winners Samantha Harvey and Jerry Xu!

For the inaugural year of the scholarship, each student will be awarded $1,000 each.

The SBA Jamal Ali Memorial Scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Coach Jamal Ali, who passed away on April 10, 2020 from COVID-19.

Jamal was a man of character and selflessness, with a generous spirit and a kind heart. He was a coach and mentor to his teams, always encouraging his players to do their best, regardless of their ability. Jamal was a loving father to Rayyan and he is dearly missed by all who knew him. You can read more about Jamal’s legacy here.

The SBA Jamal Ali Memorial Scholarship is available to students entering their first or second year of post-secondary education, who have participated in authorized SBA programs for a minimum of five years.

Funds for the scholarship are provided through donations from generous SBA members throughout the year. The funds raised will determine both the number and value of scholarships awarded each year.

2021 SBA Scholarship Winner Jerry

Jerry Xu

Hi, my name is Jerry and I have been playing with SBA since I was a child. I was first introduced to basketball when I was put in the house league program at the age of 7, and I found a passion for the game which led to me making my first rep team at the age of 8.

As I grew older, I played on several rep teams for SBA until I was 17, which has made me countless friendships and memorable experiences.

Along the way, I also volunteered as an assistant coach at SBA’s summer and March break camps, which was also a great experience to work with the next generation.

As I have recently graduated from high school, my next step will be attending the University of Toronto where I will be studying in the Rotman Commerce program for the next four years.

2021 SBA Scholarship Winner Samantha

Samantha Harvey

Hi, my name is Samantha Harvey.

I played rep basketball for six great years with the SBA.

I continued playing basketball intermural at Queens University and I am still involved in the game as a member of Kingston and District Board of Approved Basketball Officials (KDBABO) where I have refereed many SBA games.

After graduating from Queens with an honour’s degree in Health Studies, I will be starting a post graduate program this September in Addiction and Mental Health.

My time in the SBA was fantastic! I became lifelong friends with teammates and I have been mentored by many great coaches within the SBA organization.

Special Thank You

The Scarborough Basketball Association thanks all those who have contributed either through direct donations or by participating in fundraising initiatives.
