SBA Basketball League For Boys
Let’s play basketball!
The SBA League program is built for athletes that want to play a basketball game once a week with a referee and scorer’s table.
The new SBA League is our middle tier program (between House League and Academy, Rep) that’s geared toward players who already possess a higher level of basketball skill sets or who are athletically inclined and able to pick up the necessary skills fast enough to participate.
These players might not be ready for the rigors and/or costs of Academy or Rep basketball, or might not be interested in such programs for various reasons such as playing other sports at the rep level, but want a competitive environment to further groom and develop their basketball skills.
The structure of the program is 25 minutes of skills training and then 60 minutes of game play.
NOTE: See below for skill requirements. We reserve the right to recommend any player that’s not fulfilling these requirements adequately, to move to our House League development program.

Program Requirements
Dribbling
One of the most important fundamentals for young players to learn and develop is their dribbling ability. Dribbling allows a player to manoeuvrer on the basketball court. It allows a player to be a functioning part of their teams offensive performance.
- Dribble with left and right hand
- Attack dribble to the rim
- Must be able to keep their head up while under defensive pressure in order to advance the ball up the court or to pass the ball to open teammates
Shooting
Without the right technique for shooting, players have little to no control over their shot making ability. Developing the right shooting technique helps build confidence in yourself on the court given that shooting is such a big part of the game. It also helps garnering support from your teammates because you’re able to contribute offensively, putting your team in a better position to win games.
- Balance – shoulder-width apart
- Elbow – shooting hand + elbow and the rim on the same line
- Eyes – keep eyes on target
- Follow through – ball rolls off index & middle finger with arm extended like a gooses neck
- Proper right hand lay up
- Proper left hand lay up
Defense
The ability to keep one’s check (offensive player) in front of them not only gives your team a better chance of winning, but it can keep you on the court longer in games.
If players struggle to keep their defensive assignments in front of them, it breaks down team defense because it causes the need for an additional defender to leave their own check to assist.
- Being able to maintain a defensive stance
- Keeping check in front while in stance – mirroring their movements whilst in stance
- Communicating
