Developing great basketball players

The aim of the SBA Select program is assist and guide the development of committed basketball players. Through weekly training sessions and Saturday games from October to May, athletes will be trained to develop physical strength, individual and team skills. This past season we provided programs boys under 12 and 14. This program is designed as a bridge to the Blues Rep/Travel program.

The group training sessions on Wednesday nights, led by the Select and guest coaches provided players with the opportunity to further develop and grow their individual skills.

The Saturday “Game Days” provided grass-roots basketball at its best. Through out the season the game competition included nail-biters, one-point games and a few blow-outs.

The certified volunteer coaching staff strived to get the best out of each player. A component of the Select program is to offer coaches the opportunity to develop and grow their own coaching aims, objectives and skills.

The Select program ran a successful tournament for both age groups. Both the tournament championships were captures by SBA Select teams.

To celebrate Family Day weekend we ran a series of family and friends basketball challenges. The event was organized as a way to include the player’s family and friends and to promote fitness and basketball. The over 60-paired participants took part in the 2-Ball (shooting) Challenge, Hot Shot (shooting) Challenge and the Skills Course Challenge. The 3-on-3 tournaments was filled with excitement. Awards and prizes for the top four in each of the challenges.

In conjunction with the NBA All-Star weekend, we held the first SBA Select All-Star games. The players were given ballots and they voted for the top five players in their respective age groups. The coaches rounded off the top-five picks with the final selections.

As the regular season came to a close in May the teams geared-up for the playoffs. The playoffs games were intense. The scores in every game were close, and we even witness a few upsets.

The inaugural SBA Select season was a strong success and there is always room for improvement. As we look to the 2017-2018 season we are expanding to include an under 16 age group and to provide a stronger focus on team building.

The goal in our programing is to be inclusive and to build on the SBA’s philosophy an aims: “building character, developing friendships and having a whole lot of fun”.

The SBA Select League has made me a better basketball player. I have learned many drills that have helped me in my defence, passing and shooting skills. This has improved my skills greatly. I have made new friends and had a lot of fun. It was such a great experience!

SBA-Select program is a great avenue to teach our children confidence, team work, discipline and respect. The coaches are very patient to ensure each child gets the appropriate support to improve their basketball skills. Each child has a different way of coping and learning and I’ve witness the coaches adjust accordingly. If I ask Ryell what he loved most about SBA… it’s fun and win or lose he loves his teammate!!! It’s such a positive environment that truly encourages children.
Michelle – Parent, U12 Program

SBA Select was a great help in my son’s growth and development to the next level between house league to rep.
His skills and confidence improved a lot thanks to excellent coaches, focused training sessions and better competition, all while making new friends.
I would recommend SBA Select to any parents looking to further grow their child’s love for this game.
