Ray Kasongo played High School basketball for Pikeville High School in Pikeville, Kentucky, helping to propel the team to 21 wins and the 2013 region semifinals by averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game. 

In 2014-15, Kasongo played in all 34 games as a freshman for the College of Southern Idaho averaging 6.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 15.6 minutes per game while shooting 59% from the field.

He recorded two double-doubles on the season, and his best offensive game was an 18-point performance against Impact Academy. 

His sophomore season he transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he played 22 games during his only season where he averaged 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.

He then transferred to Iowa State University where he was redshirted per NCAA transfer rules before playing the 2018-19 season back in Canada with the McMaster Marauders.
